Golden Age
And Other Stories
by Naomi Novik
Subterranean Press, $25.00, 177 pp
Published: August 2017

If you’re jonesing for another Temeraire story, here’s a few tidbits for you.  This small collection comes from the wonderful Subterranean Press.  Here is a collection of short stories that were written to accompany fan art collected by the author, Naomi Novik.  Each picture inspired a different view of Temeraire’s world; some of them alternate views.  For example, my favorite is an alternate story of how Temeraire and Laurence met.  While I can see that a lot of their adventures could still come about in the same way; I think Temeraire’s, aka Celeste, education would have taken a decidedly different direction...maybe.

There was a terrific one about Temeraire’s mother and how he came to be on that ship heading to his new companion, Napoleon Bonaparte.  And a really fun one about John Wampanoag and how he went about creating his own enterprise.   And then there is the really wild one about Captain Bennett and her suitor Mr. Darcy…dragons lending such a complication to romance.

And then for something really different:  the last third of the book is a collection of drabbles.  Drabbles are, according to the author, a story of no more than 100 words.  Each tiny story is, again, inspired by a fan art.

Check out Subterranean Press’ website; although I can’t promise that they still have any copies  ~~ Catherine Book
