Science Comics: Dinosaurs: Fossils and Feathers
by MK Reed and Joe Flood
First Second, $9.99, 118pp
Published: April 2016

Yes!  Dinosaurs and comics… a perfect pairing!  With beautifully detailed illustrations and glossy pages, this is a great graphic novel for at home or in the classroom.

This book starts at the beginning.  Or, rather, the beginning of the first whole dinosaur skeleton discovery.  After a few pages of amazing illustrations of dinosaurs and how they disappeared and how their bones became fossilized, the book takes us to 1800 and a very poor family who hunted for and sold fossils.  Through the years, we learn what scientists believed were certain facts about dinosaurs (these were my favorite, partly because the “facts” are humorous, based on what is known today).  It is full of interesting information:  How newly-found dinosaur species were named (claimed by scientists, where they were found, their anatomy, or, more recently, through contests,) computer analyzing and modeling to aid paleontologists in learning more, and a lot about the competition and rivalries among scientists.

Although a comic book, this is for more advanced readers – there are many long words, scientific terms, and detailed facts.   The main lesson in this:  It emphasizes that we continue to discover new things every day and encourages us to learn about them.  My granddaughter loves discovery and I’m sure she’ll enjoy this as much as I did. ~~ Marie Davis
