Sinew and Steel and What They Told
by Carrie Vaughn
Tor, $0.99, 32pp
Published: March 2020

Sinew and Steel and What They Told is a short sci-fi story that is well worth a read. It makes you look deep inside yourself and wonder about what it means to be human.

Graff is a pilot on a pirate-hunting starship. He has a secret, a secret that's so big it would rock the worlds of those around him, a secret he had expected to take to his grave. However, after he crashes his ship and realises that he's not dead and that those he cares for are about to find out what he really is, he is at a loss as to how to cushion the blow.

He passes out and wakes a few days later to see the angry, unhappy faces of those closest to him: Ransom, the captain of the starship, whom he respects and trusts as his leader; and Ell, the ship's doctor and Graff's lover. He wants to explain, to make them understand, but this is not just his secret and he's never had to tell it to anyone before.

Will they except his explanations? Will they ever trust him again? Will they choose to destroy him for being different?

I was captivated with this story and left wanting more. I hope Carrie Vaughn considers doing a series out the story, as there are so many directions it could go with the main character and others like him. ~~ Dee Astell
