Armageddon Rules
by J.C. Nelson
Ace Fantasy, $7.99 mass market pb, 312pp
Published: February 2015

This is the second book in a promising new debut series. Click here for the review of Free Agent. There are some very interesting characters and concepts in this story.

Marissa works in partnership with a Fairy Godfather in a world of humans; thinly separated from a magical realm, and from the Fae realm.  The Fairy Godfather’s agency helps people with solutions.  And Marissa helps with those solutions.

After the last story, Marissa found her possible-true-love, and has a bestie-Princess friend. As the story opens, the Agency is gearing up for the annual onslaught of evil killer poodles. But the outbreaks are more severe than anticipated so Marissa goes looking for the source of evil. One thing leads to another and Marissa unexpectedly contracts with a demon to start the Apocalypse. (And, BTW, the clever title is all nouns, not a verb in sight…) In her attempts to stop, or at least slow down, the evitable apocalypse, things get very….complicated. And on top of all that, she still has to worry about being the unwilling handmaiden to the ultra-evil Black Queen, and being the target of another Fae Queen who really, really wants to kill her. Oh, and then there’s the dwarves from the post office who want to kill her. I might have missed someone.

This plot just rocketed along with Marissa flying from one crisis to another. The characterizations in this book were just great – we learn more about Princess Ari, Rosa- the kick-ass receptionist, Liam, Larry the ghost and a new character – Mikey the werewolf. There, I knew I was forgetting someone: the werewolves want to kill her, too.

The book was funny…just as Marissa thought she had a solution to something, it just went from bad to worse. It was great fun watching her edge closer and closer to a solution without knowing what would go sideways instead. Keep an eye on this writer. ~~ Catherine Book
