A Taste Fur Murder
by Dixie Lyle
St Martin's, $7.99, 330pp
Publication Date: February 25, 2014
Deirdre “Foxtrot” Lancaster is an animal-loving Administrative Assistant for rich, eccentric  Zelda Zoransky.  Foxtrot manages a mansion, a private zoo, and anything else that strikes her boss’s fancy. Life on the estate can be chaotic, especially after Foxtrot glimpses a giant ghost-beast in Zelda’s pet cemetery. Foxtrot is seeing animal spirits and then it gets crazier when she goes home from work to find her dead childhood cat, Tango, alive and well… oh, yes, and talking to her telepathically. If that wasn’t enough she sees animal spirits all through the pet cemetery and is joined by a shapeshifting dog who also communicates telepathically.  When a guest is murdered and ZZ is the victim of an attempted murder it is up to Foxtrot to solve the mystery with her animal assistants. Along the way she encounters a ghostly elephant and shark as well as finding she is the human Guardian of the Graveyard, a sort of supernatural crossroads that allows dead pets to visit their dead owners in the afterlife. Oh, and her graveyard supervisor is a dead white crow named Eli.

First in a new series this is marketed as a cozy mystery, which it is, but it is also a paranormal mystery and a delightful one at that.  I read it in one sitting and was sad to see the end. The next in the series, To Die Fur, was released August 26 and is reviewed here. Highly recommended. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
