Legends of Shannara: The Measure of the Magic
by Terry Brooks
Del Rey, 27.00, 383pp
Release Date: August 23, 2011

This is the second volume of Legends of Shannara, a prequel series to the previous Shannara series.

It has been five hundred years since the Great Wars. The valley has been protected by strong magic barriers but now the barriers are down and the valley is facing invasion by the trolls, and other bad guys. The last bearer of the black staff is dead and the staff has passed to a 17-year-old boy with the aid of his friend. The Elven King, an ally, is murdered by his wife who claims it was his daughter trying to get control of the magical Elfstones. A daemon is destroying everything in his way to gain the staff. Can the world as they know it be saved?

This is epic fantasy, the best of Shannara with beautifully drawn characters you care about, and enough action to keep the pages turning. You will have to have this one if you love good fantasy...I loved it. ~~ Pam Allan
