Children of Paranoia
by Trevor Shane
Dutton, $25.95, 371 pp
Release Date: September 8, 2011

Joseph has been assassinating people since the age of 18.  He believes in the cause but doesn't understand it, only that there are two sides and nobody knows who's who.

He has been the best at what he does, but when he has a difficult assignment that goes wrong he is on a dangerous assignment. He meets Maria and he finds a new purpose in life. As they begin their flight with their unborn son they are hunted by those he worked for who want the child to be trained as his father was, as a killer. He fights them and dies as he tries to protect his family. His wife survives.

The basic plot is simple and yet complex. The world building is excellent. Joseph's character peels back like an onion but is well-developed into an action adventure you can't put down. I found myself cheering when Maria rises and goes out to seek her son to give him the life his father died for. I recommend it, but I wouldn't want to live there. ~~ Pam Allan
